In a concerning trend, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has reported a significant increase in dog attacks on postal workers in 2024. According to the latest data released by USPS, there were over 6,000 reported incidents of dog attacks on postal employees last year, marking a rise of 200 cases compared to the previous year.

California emerged as the state with the highest number of dog attacks on postal workers in 2024, with 701 reported incidents. Following closely behind were Texas with 438 attacks, Ohio with 350, Illinois with 344, and New York with 322 cases. Among the cities, Los Angeles led the pack with 77 reported dog bites, followed by Houston with 65, and Chicago with 57.

The USPS announced these alarming statistics ahead of the launch of their National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, scheduled to commence on June 1. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the issue of dog attacks on postal workers and educate dog owners on how to prevent such incidents.

As part of the awareness campaign, the USPS is offering tips to dog owners on how to safely manage their pets when postal workers are delivering mail. These include keeping dogs secured inside the house or away from the delivery area, ensuring they are on a leash, and not letting children receive mail directly from the carrier.

The USPS emphasised that dog attacks on postal workers can have serious consequences, leading to costly medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and emotional distress for the affected employees. Postal carriers are trained to identify potentially dangerous situations involving dogs and are instructed on strategies to avoid confrontations with aggressive animals.

In some extreme cases, mail delivery may be halted to a residence if a dog on the premises is deemed unsafe for postal workers. This measure is taken to ensure the safety of the workers and prevent further incidents of attacks. Dog owners are encouraged to cooperate with postal workers to create a safe environment for mail delivery.

Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager, stressed the importance of dog owners taking responsibility for the behaviour of their pets to prevent future attacks on postal workers. The National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign serves as a reminder for communities to prioritise the safety of postal employees and prevent avoidable accidents.
