Mary Lou Retton, the former Olympic gymnast, was reportedly found with a bottle of wine in her passenger seat and was slurring her words during a DUI arrest earlier this month, according to various reports.
Reports citing a criminal complaint revealed that on May 17, Retton was allegedly in possession of a bottle of wine in her car when she was pulled over for a DUI incident in West Virginia. The Associated Press highlighted that she was arrested for allegedly “driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties.”
The incident unfolded when police in West Virginia responded to reports of a Porsche with a Texas license plate driving erratically near downtown Fairmont. Officers found Retton in her car in a Marion County AutoZone parking lot, where they discovered a screw-top bottle of wine in the passenger seat, as per court documents cited by WDTV.
During their interaction with Retton, police claimed that she slurred her words, leading them to conduct three standard field sobriety tests that indicated she was impaired. The former Olympian refused to undergo a blood test for alcohol, according to the AP.
As a consequence, she was arrested on one count of “driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties” on the same day. She posted a personal recognizance bond of $1,500 and was subsequently released.
