Man Killed in Tragic New York City Sewage Boat Explosion Identified

Raymond Feige, a devoted employee of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, tragically lost his life in a boat explosion on the Hudson River. The incident, which occurred on May 24, also left two others injured. The department described Feige as a highly respected engineer with exceptional dedication to the city’s critical wastewater operations.
Feige, 59, had a long-standing career with the DEP, spanning over 33 years. According to the agency, he was known for his deep technical knowledge and unwavering commitment to his work. His colleagues remembered him fondly for his passion for working on the water and his strong camaraderie with his shipmates.
The fatal accident took place at the North River Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility in West Harlem while Feige was carrying out his duties on the vessel. Responding to a distress call about a person in the water, authorities discovered a large explosion had torn through the boat’s hull upon arrival at the scene.
While Feige tragically lost his life in the explosion, a second DEP employee sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Another colleague declined medical treatment at the location. The DEP has confirmed that the incident is currently under investigation to determine the root cause of the explosion.
Reports suggest that the vessel involved in the explosion was responsible for transporting raw sewage from the city to a nearby treatment facility. Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms from the New York City Fire Department revealed that a compartment containing raw sewage exploded, causing Feige to be thrown into the water and pinned between the boat and the pier.
Initial findings indicate that Feige was engaged in welding activities on the boat, with speculation that methane from the sewage could have triggered the blast by coming into contact with the welding flame. Despite the loss, DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala paid tribute to Feige, highlighting his exemplary work ethic and the significant impact he had on his colleagues.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams conveyed his condolences to Feige’s family, friends, and co-workers, acknowledging the pain of the sudden loss. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, coming just a week after a fatal collision involving a Mexican Navy ship and the Brooklyn Bridge.
