Michael Jackson Biopic ‘Likely’ to be Delayed by a Year After Major Reshoots

The much-anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua and featuring Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew, in the lead role, may not hit the big screens until 2026. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer disclosed during the studio’s Q4 2025 earnings call that the film’s release date might be pushed beyond the 2025 fiscal year. This delay is expected to impact the studio’s financial results for fiscal ’26 but will contribute to an already robust fiscal ’27 lineup.
In a statement, Feltheimer expressed excitement about the compelling 3½ hours of footage produced by Graham King and directed by Antoine Fuqua. He mentioned that Lionsgate would reveal a definitive release strategy and timing in the coming weeks. Lionsgate’s fiscal year concludes on March 31, 2026, suggesting that ‘Michael’ could potentially premiere post-April 2026.
Subsequently, Lionsgate’s film head, Adam Fogelson, confirmed that ‘Michael’ will be split into two parts to enhance the cinematic experience. Despite several media reports suggesting turmoil surrounding the project, a source close to the production clarified that the biopic is still progressing, with reshoots scheduled for March.
The need for reshoots arose after legal representatives discovered a crucial clause in a settlement agreement between Jackson and one of his accusers dating back to 1993. Following allegations of sexual abuse by a 13-year-old, which culminated in an out-of-court settlement of $25 million, the agreement stipulated that the accusers, particularly the Chandlers, should not be portrayed or referenced in any movie about Jackson.
The script, penned by John Logan, purportedly included the Chandler incident inadvertently, leading to the current need for revisions. Lionsgate had initially showcased ‘Michael’ during its 2024 CinemaCon presentation, but with principal photography wrapped up in May 2024, the film has faced a series of delays, shifting its release from April 18, 2025, to a later date in October 2025, and now potentially beyond 2025.
The Jackson estate vehemently denies all abuse allegations against the late pop icon, who was cleared of similar charges in 2005. The 2019 documentary ‘Leaving Neverland’ reignited controversy, prompting ongoing legal battles. In the biopic, Jaafar Jackson portrays his uncle Michael, with Coleman Domingo and Nia Long depicting Jackson’s parents, and Miles Teller assuming the role of Branca.
