Leaked Emails Reveal Attempts to Manipulate Intelligence Report Involving Tulsi Gabbard’s Aide

The aide in question, Joe Kent, was revealed to have urged intelligence officials to modify their assessments regarding Venezuelan gang activity to align with statements made by President Trump on immigration.
The leaked emails showed that Joe Kent, serving as Gabbard’s chief of staff, reached out to the National Intelligence Council to request changes to the report. In his correspondence, he specifically mentioned the need to tweak the document so that it would not be used against Gabbard or the President.
The report in question focused on the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua, which had become a target of the Trump administration’s enforcement actions on immigration. Notably, Trump had signed a proclamation invoking the rarely used Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target noncitizens associated with the gang.
The leaked emails highlighted Kent’s efforts to steer the intelligence assessment in a direction favourable to the administration’s stance. However, the initial and revised assessments conducted by the National Intelligence Council did not support the narrative promoted by the President regarding the gang’s alleged ties to the Venezuelan government.
President Trump’s justification for invoking the 18th-century law revolved around implicating the gang as collaborating with the Venezuelan regime. Nevertheless, the intelligence community’s findings, as outlined in the assessments, contradicted these claims and pointed to a lack of conclusive evidence supporting such allegations.
Kent’s emails also indicated a push to emphasise a narrative linking Venezuelan immigrants to the gang’s activities, regardless of their actual involvement. Following the release of the final version of the memo, which still did not align with Trump’s assertions, Tulsi Gabbard took action by dismissing two senior intelligence officials involved in the matter. Connecticut Representative Jim Himes criticised the move, suggesting that the firings may have been retaliatory and aimed at aligning intelligence analysis with political agendas.
