California Animal Shelter Hosts ‘Puppy Prom’ for Rescued Dogs

An animal shelter in California recently organised a heartwarming event known as the ‘Puppy Prom’ for rescue dogs. The Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego held its 11th Annual Puppy Prom (and Kitty Court) on May 18, 2025. The event aimed to bring together alumni of the shelter along with their owners for a day filled with fun and celebration.
The Puppy Prom is an annual event that is free for shelter alumni and their owners to attend. It includes various activities such as prom-themed food, drinks, games, and even a ‘best dressed’ competition to crown the Puppy Prom court. Labeth Thompson, the pet acquisition manager at the center, expressed delight in seeing how rescue pets were experiencing their happily-ever-after at the event.
Rescue pets and their owners flocked to McGregor’s Bar & Grill in San Diego to partake in the festivities. Activities like the “wheel of FURtune” and a “Make-Your-Own-MUTTmosa Bar” kept both humans and their four-legged friends entertained. Emily Navala, who attended with her dog Donna, highlighted the event as a great opportunity to socialize and have a fun time with other animals.
The Puppy Prom provided a perfect platform for dogs to flaunt their fashion sense, with many rocking tuxedos and tiaras for the occasion. Owners like Robin Missailidis, who adopted her pup Blue from the center, praised the event for its positive impact on the pets. Missailidis commended the Helen Woodward Animal Center for their dedicated work with animals, making the event a full circle moment for her and Blue.
A highlight of the event was the ‘Best Dressed Prom King and Queen’ competition, where six winners were crowned. Reigning champ Sir Fritzle von Vicious and CinaBella Buns emerged as the prom king and queen, while Buster and MaryJane were awarded the titles of prince and princess. Additionally, Devin and Bonney received the people’s choice awards, showcasing the variety of adorable and well-dressed contestants at the Puppy Prom.
The Puppy Prom also featured a ‘Kitty Court’ competition for cats, ensuring that all furry friends had a chance to shine. The event not only celebrated the winners but also emphasised the importance of every rescue dog’s journey to finding their forever homes. Labeth Thompson reiterated that the Puppy Prom was a heartwarming way to witness rescue pets enjoying their happily ever after.
