Renowned actor Alan Alda, best known for his role in the classic TV series M*A*S*H, has shared an exclusive health update on his journey managing Parkinson’s Disease. The 89-year-old star, who was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2015, opened up about his ongoing battle with the disease, offering insights into his daily struggles and triumphs.

Speaking candidly in an interview, Alda revealed that living with Parkinson’s has presented him with a series of challenges that he tackles head-on every day. Despite facing difficulties such as prosopagnosia, or face blindness, which makes it hard for him to recognise people, Alda maintains a positive attitude, describing his life as a continuous puzzle-solving game.
“I’m always finding a new way to do something,” Alda shared, reflecting on his journey with the disease. “It’s a little like a game. I’ve found whatever the little problem is, if I keep at it, I can eventually solve it, and then I feel like a million bucks.”
Alda emphasised that managing Parkinson’s has transitioned from a part-time to almost a full-time job for him. However, he credits this challenge with keeping him constantly seeking humour and positivity in his daily life, showcasing his resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
In addition to his battle with Parkinson’s, Alda has continued to stay active in his career, with acting serving as a fulfilling side gig. Making a cameo appearance in Tina Fey’s Netflix series adaptation of his 1981 film “The Four Seasons,” Alda expressed his admiration for Fey’s work and the opportunity to be part of the project, which has received positive reviews from audiences.
During his involvement in the series, Alda shared some light-hearted marriage advice, drawing from his own 68-year-long marriage with his wife, Arlene. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a sense of humour and closeness in a relationship, highlighting the key role communication and understanding play in a successful partnership.
Reflecting on his enduring relationship with Arlene, Alda fondly recalled the moment they first connected over a fallen rum cake at a party in New York City in 1956. Their shared sense of humour and bond over the years have been a source of strength and support for Alda, especially during his journey with Parkinson’s.
Despite the physical challenges posed by the disease, including visible tremors, Alda expressed his gratitude for Arlene’s unwavering support and care. Her presence and assistance in everyday tasks have been a constant source of comfort for Alda, demonstrating the power of love and unity in overcoming obstacles.
As he navigates the complexities of Parkinson’s Disease, Alda remains grateful for the ability to overcome hurdles and achieve personal milestones. His positive outlook and determination serve as an inspiration to many, reminding us all of the importance of resilience, humour, and the unwavering support of loved ones in facing life’s challenges.
