Utah Man Accused of Holding Girlfriend and Her Family Hostage for 6 Months

A 23-year-old man from Millcreek, Utah, named Dominic Garcia has been arrested on 28 charges after reportedly holding his girlfriend and her family hostage for nearly six months, authorities say.
Garcia, who was taken into custody on Saturday, May 17, faces a range of charges, including aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, threat of violence, and hazing involving a dangerous weapon, based on court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
The harrowing ordeal came to light when police responded to a distress call from a Millcreek residence, where a man and six family members were allegedly being held against their will by Garcia, the boyfriend of one of the family members who was pregnant at the time.
According to the affidavit, the family allowed Garcia to move in with them in December 2024. Soon after, he claimed that his family had ties to a cartel and instructed the family to comply with his demands in order to stay safe from the cartel’s retaliation, as per the affidavit.
Allegedly, Garcia repeatedly threatened the family, stating that they would be in danger of being harmed by the cartel if they did not obey his instructions. This caused great distress within the family, leading one member to purchase a handgun for protection.
Garcia’s control over the family escalated when he forced one of the family members into a gruelling “boot camp” regime, involving intense workouts, ice baths, and other forms of physical and mental torture.
Furthermore, Garcia restricted the family’s movements, monitored their phones, and limited their outings to only two hours per person. This oppressive environment caused immense fear and anxiety among the family members, with some feeling their lives were in serious jeopardy.
The affidavit also detailed instances of Garcia being violent towards the family’s pets and making threats to kill both the family members and his pregnant girlfriend on multiple occasions.
Following his arrest, Garcia confessed to authorities that the claims about his cartel connections were fabricated and expressed his inability to halt the deception due to fear of losing their acceptance.
Currently, Garcia is being held in custody without bail as authorities consider him a flight risk and a potential danger to the family if released. There are concerns that he may attempt to flee to Mexico, where his family reportedly resides.
The family members involved in this traumatic ordeal continue to live in fear of retaliation from Garcia and the supposed cartel threats, emphasising the lasting impact of the trauma they endured during the six-month ordeal.
