Initial reports indicated that a mechanical issue led to the ship losing power, causing it to collide with the Brooklyn Bridge shortly after departing from Pier 17. Chief Wilson Aramboles of the New York Police Department’s Special Operations Division mentioned that the ship was en route to Iceland when the incident happened.
The vessel, docked in Acapulco, Mexico, is usually stationed until cadets complete their training at the Heroica Escuela Naval Militar, the Mexican naval academy. Officials confirmed that there was no significant damage to the Brooklyn Bridge following the crash, and fortunately, no individuals fell into the water during the incident.
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez provided reassurance that a preliminary assessment indicated minimal impact on the bridge’s structure. President Sheinbaum extended her condolences to the families of the crew members who lost their lives, acknowledging the tragedy that befell the Cuauhtémoc Training Ship during its journey to mark the end of cadet training.
