In a Facebook post translated from Romanian, Mangeac expressed his astonishment at unexpectedly coming “face to face with history” during what he thought would be a routine outing.

Mangeac shared that he was simply looking to exercise and relax in the fields and forests, as he often does, when his metal detector suddenly emitted a strong signal. As he started digging, his excitement grew, and he described feeling as though he might be in a dream. Despite the surreal nature of the find, Mangeac meticulously documented each coin over two days before turning them over to local authorities. He expressed his desire to one day visit a museum with his child, where he can share the story of his remarkable discovery and its historical significance.

In an interview with Romanian news station TVR Info, Mangeac recounted how his day took an unexpected turn when he decided to explore a field instead of heading into the forest as originally planned. While digging in the grass, he heard a loud noise from his shovel and uncovered shards and coins. Unsure of what to do next, he sought help from local officials who carefully counted the coins, revealing the magnitude of his find.

The silver coins, known as denarii, were first minted in Rome around 211 B.C. and remained a prevalent form of currency for approximately 500 years. Typically featuring depictions of deities on one side and symbols representing the empire on the other, these coins offer valuable insights into Roman history and culture. The goddess Roma, symbolizing the city of Rome, prominently graced many denarii, signifying the empire’s power and influence.

Local authorities, including the town mayor Marian Negru, recognised the significance of Mangeac’s discovery, noting that it adds to the rich tapestry of their town’s Roman heritage.
