In a shocking turn of events, Tasha Purnell, a 44-year-old former middle school principal in Delaware, has admitted to two counts of third-degree rape and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child. The offenses took place between 2010 and 2014 with a minor under the age of 16 while Purnell was working as a teacher. She later became the principal of A.I. Middle School in the same school district, putting her in a position of authority over young students.

Purnell, also known by the name Tasha Oliver professionally, is now facing the possibility of spending up to 75 years in prison. The guilty plea came as part of a deal with prosecutors, resulting in the dropping of 16 additional felony sexual crime charges originally filed against her. Despite the potential sentence being six to 75 years, the prosecution will recommend a maximum of eight years in prison.

The case came to light when the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit started looking into the matter in September 2023. It was only in August 2024 that Purnell was indicted on 19 charges, but information about this was not shared with parents or teachers until two months ago when a local outlet broke the story.

Following her guilty plea, Purnell’s bond was revoked, and she was ordered to be held at the Delores J. Baylor Correctional Center until her sentencing in August. Attorney General Kathy Jennings highlighted the severity of the charges, stating that the abuse of a child, especially by someone in a position of trust like a principal, is reprehensible. She praised the prosecutors and the Delaware State Police for their diligent work on the case.
