The 71-year-old star, known for her time on the “Today” show, spoke candidly about her decision not to re-enter the dating scene following her previous marriage.
At the QVC Celebrates Launch Of Q50 Age Of Possibility Platform event in Santa Monica, California, Gifford expressed that she had an extraordinary marriage that sadly did not last. Despite this, she continues to maintain a strong friendship with her ex-partner. Gifford revealed, “We were together almost three years, and it just wasn’t meant to be forever. But we love each other, so you just take a day at a time.”
Reflecting on her past relationships, Gifford shared insights into her previous marriages. She was married to composer Paul Johnson from 1976 to 1983 and to Frank Gifford until his passing in 2015. Together, they had two children, son Cody and daughter Cassidy. Gifford admitted, “I don’t love lightly… I’ve only been in love three times in my life and the first two are dead. So, he’s basically all I’ve got.”
Despite the challenges she has faced, Gifford maintains a positive outlook on life and relationships. She acknowledged that widowhood is a difficult journey, stating, “My husband’s been gone now for 10 years, and widowhood is not something I recommend unless you hate your husband.” She also emphasised the importance of cherishing joy and not settling for anything less.

She highlighted the emotional impact of the split, expressing, “My joy is non-negotiable… It’s always hard because when you love someone, you love someone deeply. Looking towards the future, Gifford expressed a newfound perspective on love and relationships. She acknowledged that not every love story ends in marriage and revealed her intention not to rush into new relationships. Gifford shared, “You aren’t supposed to marry everyone you fall in love with. And I don’t want to love easily… It’s the people who have meant something deep and powerful in your life that are the hardest things to get over.”
