Tina Knowles Reveals the Reason Behind Richard Lawson Divorce in New Memoir

Tina Knowles, the renowned 71-year-old mother and author, has recently opened up about her divorce from ex-husband Richard Lawson in her latest memoir, “Matriarch,” published last month. In her memoir, Tina delves into the moment she made the difficult decision to file for divorce at the age of 69 in July 2023 and the personal importance behind ending their relationship.
Reflecting on their 10 years together, Tina recalled a pivotal day in July 2023 when she felt the need to “wake up” and acknowledge that her marriage with Richard needed to come to an end. Although Tina had conversations with Richard about her feelings for some time, she came to the realization that continuing the marriage was not serving her well. She expressed in her book that she felt she deserved more happiness and fulfillment in her life and that staying in the relationship would not provide her with the love and respect she needed.
In her memoir, Tina shared that she felt a certain pressure to showcase that second chances at love are possible, but ultimately, she had to prioritize her own well-being. This led her to the difficult decision of filing for divorce. Despite the heaviness of her heart during this decision, Tina emphasised that she did it without any ill will and has not lost any sleep over it.
Tina highlighted the contrast between this divorce and the end of her first marriage to Mathew Knowles in 2011, where she felt like she was going to “die.” She expressed that following her divorce from Richard, she thrived and was able to redirect her focus towards aspects of her life that brought her joy and security beyond romantic relationships, gaining more self-confidence in the process.
After the divorce, Tina received some negative online reactions directed towards her, particularly from women. This caused her to reflect on instances where she may have internalized sexism herself.
