40 Belgian Malinois Dogs Found Crammed into Cabinets and Closets of N.Y.C. Apartment During Rescue

In a shocking discovery, 40 Belgian Malinois dogs were found crammed inside closets and cabinets of an apartment in New York City. The rescue operation was conducted by the Animal Care Centers of New York City (ACC) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The rescuers were alarmed to find the dogs in filthy and overcrowded conditions with no access to fresh air or sunlight.

The dogs, ranging from fully grown adults to young puppies, were believed to have never been outside before the rescue operation. Tara Mercado, the director of behavior and shelter operations at ACC, expressed concern, stating that “These dogs have reportedly lived in total confinement for their entire lives.” She described finding full-grown Malinois hidden in cabinets and crammed behind furniture.

Dr. Biana Tamimi, the director of shelter medicine at ACC, highlighted the challenges faced by the dogs, noting that they likely had never experienced walking on a leash, touching grass, or meeting strangers. However, she mentioned seeing signs of curiosity among the dogs, giving hope for their recovery.

Many of the rescued Belgian Malinois dogs will require long-term care and rehabilitation due to their fearful and undersocialized nature as a result of their previous confinement. The ACC is seeking assistance from the community to accommodate the influx of dogs, as their shelters are already overcapacity. An adoption special has been launched for dogs over 40 lbs to encourage adoption and free up space in the facilities.

While the ACC and ASPCA spearheaded the rescue effort, other animal welfare organizations have offered their support in finding suitable homes for the dogs. The authorities are conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the dogs being kept in such appalling conditions in the apartment. The rescued dogs are now adjusting to their new environment outside the cramped apartment, with hopes for a brighter future ahead.
