Childcare Worker Accused of Mistreating Children at Riverside Nursery in South London

A childcare worker, Roksana Lecka, is currently on trial facing allegations of mistreating 23 children under her care at the Riverside Nursery in South London between January and June 2024. The prosecution has presented CCTV footage in court that purportedly shows Lecka pinching several children and even grabbing one child by their neck.
According to reports from BBC and Sky News, the prosecution argued its case by showing CCTV footage that captured Lecka allegedly pinching a male child on the nose, body, wrist, and mouth. Colleagues of Lecka checked the child for any red marks following the incidents, and a teaching assistant also claimed to have witnessed Lecka assaulting a child at the nursery.
In addition to the pinching incidents, the CCTV footage reportedly showed Lecka grabbing a child by the neck. Staff members at the nursery stated that several children had visible injuries that included pinch marks, red skin, and raised skin allegedly caused by Lecka’s actions. The footage was shown in court, leading to audible gasps from parents in the gallery whose children attended the nursery.
Prosecutor Tracy Ayling informed jurors that the footage displayed Lecka watching other staff members as she harmed a child, seemingly to check if anyone was observing her actions. Lecka, who was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty on June 5, 2024, admitted to two counts of child cruelty but denied 21 similar charges during the trial.
In her statement to the court, Lecka denied mistreating the children and claimed to have followed the nursery’s handling procedures for children. She expressed ignorance as to how the children sustained injuries, maintaining that she had a normal workday without any accidents involving the children getting hurt.
It was revealed in court that there were no initial concerns raised when Lecka was hired at the childcare center, where she looked after children aged between 10 months and 2 years. However, staff members later noticed peculiar behavior from Lecka, leading to her being sent home from work on one occasion for appearing disoriented, causing concern among the staff.
