An African conservation charity, supported by Prince Harry, is under scrutiny after acknowledging human rights abuses by its rangers against indigenous communities in the Republic of Congo. African Parks, managing 23 national parks across 13 African countries, conducted an independent investigation into allegations of rape, beatings, and torture by their rangers. While the details of the findings by Omnia Strategy LLP were not publicly released, African Parks expressed regret for the pain inflicted on victims.
Prince Harry, a board member of African Parks since 2016, has not commented publicly on the investigation. The charity stated that the investigation highlighted failures in their systems and processes, particularly in the management of Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Survival International, which raised concerns about the abuse, criticized African Parks for not disclosing the investigation details. According to Director Caroline Pearce, indigenous people in Odzala-Kokoua National Park have endured beatings, torture, and rape by rangers for years. Pearce expressed doubts about the efficacy of additional reports, staff, and guidelines in preventing further violations.
