Allison Herbert, a bride-to-be, took her love for espresso martinis a step further by hosting a unique competition to determine the signature cocktail for her upcoming wedding. Set to tie the knot on June 7 in Omaha, Nebraska, Herbert decided to focus on nailing down the perfect espresso martini recipe for her big day instead of the traditional wedding cake flavour.

For Allison Herbert, espresso martinis hold a special place in her heart, so much so that she has gone the extra mile to ensure her wedding guests can enjoy this favourite drink. Along with hiring a special bartender exclusively for crafting espresso martinis, she has even ordered a personalised ice luge from St. Louis, Missouri, to add a touch of flair to the celebration. The ice luge will be used for pouring each martini into a glass for guests to savour.
However, with the multitude of espresso martini recipes available, Herbert faced a dilemma in choosing the perfect one. To aid in her decision-making process, she turned to her friends and organised an espresso martini competition on May 3 in Omaha. Nine participants, including her sister and maid of honour Brooke, bridesmaids, and close friends, put their mixology skills to the test.
The competition was a tight one, with each group putting in efforts to tweak and perfect their recipes before presenting them to the bride for judgement. The primary criteria for evaluation were the taste and appearance of the cocktails. Herbert particularly favoured martinis with a foamy top, as it added an aesthetic appeal to the drink.
According to Emily Olson, one of the competitors, “The bride loves espresso martinis for the bold caffeine-alcohol combo, it has a balance of sweetness and strength, making for the perfect cocktail!” After a thorough tasting session, the winning recipe emerged as the one crafted by Bridget and Ellie, praised for its universal appeal with a hint of sweetness that Herbert believed her guests would enjoy.
The triumphant recipe included 1.5 oz of Tito’s Vodka, 1 oz of Mr. Black Spirits Cold Brew Coffee Liquor, 1 oz of Starbucks Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate, 0.25 oz of simple syrup, and 0.25 oz of Kahlúa. Following the competition, Olson shared a video on TikTok capturing Herbert sampling the drinks, with the bride dressed in a T-shirt featuring an espresso martini design and ensuring to cleanse her palate between tastings.
The video, which garnered over 300,000 views, showcased the fun and excitement of the competition, providing a glimpse into the lengths Herbert went to in order to select the perfect wedding cocktail. With the winning recipe now chosen, guests attending the wedding can look forward to indulging in a delightful and expertly crafted espresso martini.
The event not only highlighted Herbert’s creativity and passion for espresso martinis but also showcased the camaraderie and dedication of her friends in creating a memorable experience for her special day. The Espresso Martini Competition not only added a unique touch to the wedding planning process but also brought together loved ones in a fun and engaging manner, fostering a sense of shared joy and celebration ahead of the wedding day.
