At just 18 months old, a little boy has already undergone eight surgeries and faced a near-death experience in the hospital. On the 9th of October, 2023, Ashleigh Brand gave birth to her son, Luca, who arrived six weeks earlier than expected. Luca was born with CHARGE syndrome, a rare genetic disorder impacting various parts of the body such as the nerves, heart, eyes, genitals, and ears. Ashleigh Brand revealed to News.com.au that her son’s condition poses a significant threat to his life and necessitates ongoing, intensive medical care.

“It was a very horrible experience,” Brand shared with the outlet as she described the moment they discovered Luca’s challenging medical condition. The new mother expressed uncertainties surrounding Luca’s survival due to his premature birth. Since his arrival, Luca has spent considerable time in hospitals undergoing multiple surgeries to address his complex medical needs. According to Brand, Luca has faced numerous complications related to his brain and has required the placement of two shunts on each side, along with valve replacements.

In addition to these procedures, Luca relies on a feeding tube, oxygen support during sleep, and various therapies to assist with his condition. A critical moment arose when Luca experienced incessant vomiting for a continuous period of five days, putting his life at risk. Despite the challenging circumstances, Brand remains resilient for her son, acknowledging the emotional turmoil that accompanies such a journey. “Sometimes I have my moments and ask, ‘why us?'” Brand confessed, adding, “But at the same time, he obviously chose us for a reason.”

The Brand family has received an outpouring of support from relatives and well-wishers. A GoFundMe page was set up by a cousin with the aim of raising $10,000 to contribute towards Luca’s ongoing medical care. The fundraiser outlined plans for a “six-week cycling adventure” as a means of generating funds to support Luca’s unique needs. With the understanding that Luca will require specialized medical attention and equipment for the entirety of his life, the fundraising efforts are crucial to ensuring his continued well-being.

Luca’s future remains uncertain in terms of further surgeries and potential challenges related to his speech, vision, and mobility. Despite these uncertainties, Luca’s infectious personality continues to shine through. Describing her son as the “cutest little boy,” Brand expressed pride in Luca’s resilience and unwavering happiness amidst his medical battles.
