Former President Donald Trump recently stirred up controversy during a celebration at the White House for the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl win. While praising the Eagles’ victory during his speech, Trump took a swipe at singer Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Eagles had defeated the Chiefs, who include Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, in the Super Bowl showdown, which Trump described as “a little surprising” yet “an incredible game.”

During his address, Trump reminisced about attending the game in person on February 9th in New Orleans, marking the first time a sitting president had ever graced a Super Bowl event. Trump made a quip about Taylor Swift, asking the audience, “I was there along with Taylor Swift. How did that work out?” This jab at Swift follows previous attacks on the pop star, particularly after she endorsed Trump’s presidential opponent, Kamala Harris, in September 2024.

In his speech, Trump also highlighted the Eagles’ unique “tush push” play, lauded star running back Saquon Barkley, and invited players like Lane Johnson to share their thoughts at the podium. However, several key players, including star quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts, were conspicuously absent from the White House visit. Trump acknowledged Hurts’ absence but praised his skills, referring to him as a “terrific player.”
Hours before the Eagles’ White House visit, it was reported that Jalen Hurts and other members of the championship team would not be attending due to scheduling conflicts. NBC News White House correspondent Yamiche Alcindor confirmed Hurts’ absence and mentioned that the White House cited scheduling issues for the no-shows. NBC Philly reporter John Clark further noted the absence of players like DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown, as well as several defensive team members.
This isn’t the first time Trump has sparked controversy with his remarks. The former president’s dig at Taylor Swift and the absent Eagles players adds to a series of events where his actions and statements have garnered mixed reactions from the public. While some support his outspoken nature, others view his behaviour as divisive and inappropriate.
As the news of Trump’s comments spread, reactions poured in from various quarters, with some criticising his targeting of Swift and the omitted players. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions and polarisation in American society, with even sports events becoming intertwined with political undertones.
In the realm of sports and entertainment, these instances draw attention to the complexities of public figures navigating their personal beliefs, relationships, and affiliations in a highly scrutinised environment. The intersection of politics, sports, and celebrity culture often leads to heightened emotions and heated discussions, reflecting broader societal dynamics and power struggles.
As the saga around Trump, Taylor Swift, and the Philadelphia Eagles continues to unfold, it underscores the intricate web of connections that shape public discourse and perception in the modern era. Whether it’s a playful jab at a pop star or the absence of key players at a prestigious event, such incidents serve as fodder for ongoing debates and reflections on the intertwining of personal lives with public personas.
