According to an affidavit filed by the Taft Independent School District police, Cruz was accused of recklessly taking the Taft player to the ground. However, Mathis school superintendent Todd White disputed this claim, stating that Cruz tripped as she entered the altercation and was not intentionally aggressive towards the player.

While Cruz will not be present with the team for the rest of the season, she continues to teach at the school. Reports suggest that the school may provide legal representation for Cruz to contest the assault charge.
