Texas Mother Faces Charges for Providing Vodka Jell-O Shots to 5th-Grade Students at School

In a shocking turn of events, a Texas mother, Teresa Bernal, has been arrested on felony charges for allegedly serving vodka Jell-O shots to fifth-grade students during a school holiday party. The incident took place on December 20 at Jones Elementary School in Tyler, where multiple students reportedly consumed the alcohol-laced treats.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, the students had almost finished all the Jell-O shots before it was discovered that they contained vodka. Bernal, during an interview with Darrin Grissom, the peace officer for the elementary school, claimed to be unaware of any alcohol in the Jell-O shots. She even stated that she did not know Jell-O shots were typically made with alcohol until that day.
Upon realising the situation, teachers immediately sent all students who had consumed the Jell-O shots to the school nurse for evaluation. Out of the 15 students interviewed by Grissom, almost all reported experiencing stomachaches and headaches. Shockingly, at least two students had more severe reactions, with one student vomiting twice and another passing out at school.
Further investigation revealed that some of the Jell-O shots were garnished with whipped cream and strawberries, while others had a holiday-themed presentation. Grissom reached out to the store from which Bernal had purchased the Jell-O shots, and the seller confirmed that Bernal had inquired about the alcohol content only after the shots had been consumed by the children.
The arrest affidavit also pointed out a Facebook post where Bernal had ordered the Jell-O shots, clearly stating that they were made with vodka. Grissom concluded that there was no way Bernal could have missed the presence of alcohol in the treats. As a result, Bernal was taken into custody on April 21, with a bail set at $75,000. She is yet to appear in court and does not have legal representation at this time.
