Former Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson was convicted on Tuesday, April 22, of second-degree murder for shooting his 65-year-old wife, Sheryl Ferguson, at their Anaheim Hills home on the night of Aug. 3, 2023. Ferguson had claimed during his trial that the shooting was an accident following an argument with his wife. However, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced the guilty verdict with prosecutors citing a “drunken argument over money” that led to the fatal shooting.

According to reports, after the guilty verdict was delivered, Ferguson hugged his son and whispered words of comfort, saying, “It’s OK. Be strong.” The jury found Ferguson guilty of one felony count of murder, along with additional felony enhancements related to the use of a firearm and causing great bodily injury and death. The former judge could potentially face up to 40 years in prison for his crimes. The D.A.’s office described Ferguson’s actions following the shooting as egregious, stating that instead of helping his wife, he chose to text his court bailiff and clerk about the incident.

The D.A.’s office detailed that Ferguson texted, “I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry,” before leaving his son to perform CPR on his mother while he retreated outside. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer strongly condemned Ferguson’s actions, stating, “When he pulled the trigger and killed his wife, Judge Jeffrey Ferguson knew he was just like the violent criminals he has sent to prison.” Spitzer expressed gratitude towards the jury for their careful consideration of the evidence that led to the guilty verdict.

During his first trial, Ferguson admitted that he and his wife had an argument at a restaurant before the shooting incident occurred. He acknowledged consuming alcohol that evening, which may have impaired his judgment. Ferguson claimed that he did not intend to shoot his wife, alleging that the firearm accidentally discharged during the altercation. However, prosecutors highlighted key details about the events leading up to the shooting, painting a picture of a heated argument that spiraled out of control.
Ferguson’s defence attorney requested permission for him to embrace his son following the guilty verdict. The emotional moment between the father and son in the courtroom underscored the tragic impact of the case. With the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence looming, Ferguson’s future now rests in the hands of the justice system. As the community processes the outcome of the trial, the case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of accountability in such cases.
The guilty verdict against Ferguson marks a significant milestone in the legal proceedings that have unfolded since the tragic events of 2023. As the former judge faces the prospect of incarceration, the repercussions of his actions continue to reverberate within the legal community and beyond. The courtroom embrace shared between Ferguson and his son serves as a poignant moment amidst the ensuing legal battle that has captivated public attention. The case stands as a testament to the intricate workings of the justice system and the pursuit of truth and accountability in the face of tragedy.
