Vanessa Bryant, the widow of basketball legend Kobe Bryant, recently paid a touching tribute to her late husband on what would have been their 24th wedding anniversary. Sharing a heartfelt post on Instagram, Vanessa commemorated the special day with a photo of herself and Kobe at the Rush Hour 2 premiere back in July 2001.
The couple first crossed paths in the summer of 1999, and within six months, they decided to take their relationship to the next level. On April 18, 2001, Vanessa and Kobe exchanged vows at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point, Calif., in a private ceremony attended by just a dozen people. Vanessa’s tribute included a nod to Kobe’s No. 24 Los Angeles Lakers jersey, symbolising their lasting bond.
Following their wedding, Vanessa and Kobe became parents to four daughters: Natalia, Bianka, Capri, and the late Gianna. Tragically, Gianna, just 13 years old, lost her life in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, alongside her father and seven others. The untimely deaths of Kobe and Gianna shook the world and left a profound impact on their family, friends, and fans.
In the lead-up to the fifth anniversary of the devastating accident, Vanessa announced the upcoming release of a book titled Mamba & Mambacita Forever. The book will feature over 100 murals and stories honouring the memory and legacy of Kobe and Gianna. Scheduled for release on August 19, the book’s launch will precede Kobe Bryant Day on August 24, a date dedicated to celebrating the life of the basketball icon.
Despite the immense grief and loss Vanessa has endured since the passing of her beloved husband and daughter, she has demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience. In March 2021, she shared with PEOPLE her determination to keep moving forward for the sake of her daughters: “This pain is unimaginable, but you just have to get up and push forward… getting out of bed and pushing forward is going to make the day better for my girls and for me. So that’s what I do.”
In remembrance of Kobe and Gianna, Vanessa, along with the Los Angeles Lakers, unveiled a bronze statue named “Girl Dad” outside Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, honouring Kobe’s devotion to his daughters.
