Robots Compete Against Humans in Historic Half-Marathon Race in China

In a groundbreaking event, robots and humans competed against each other in a half-marathon race for the first time in Beijing, China. The Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon, which took place on Saturday, April 19, saw real people facing off against 21 robots on a challenging track. Among the participants was the winning robot, Tiangong Ultra, designed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre, which completed the race in two hours and 40 minutes.


While Tiangong Ultra’s time is significantly slower than the world record of 56 minutes and 42 seconds held by Ugandan racer Jacob Kiplimo, it marks a notable improvement from its previous attempt. Earlier reports indicated that the robot had taken eight hours to finish the 13.1-mile race on January 22. The success of Tiangong Ultra can be attributed to enhancements such as a more stable posture with longer strides, reflecting advancements in technology and design.
According to officials, the competition aimed to showcase the technological progress in the field of robotics in China. Despite encountering technical difficulties, including robots falling over or running out of power, the event garnered significant attention and excitement from spectators. “We are very impressed by the progress China has made in this regard,” one attendee, Wang Lijuan, shared with the Associated Press.
Jiang Guangzhi, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, acknowledged that the race served as a testing ground for various technical approaches, emphasizing the ongoing developments in the robotics industry.
