Three people tragically lost their lives in a devastating Easter morning fire that tore through a crowded home in New York City. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) reported that the fire broke out at 87-25 Chevy Chase St. in the Jamaica Estates section of Queens. Chief of Department John Esposito stated that fire units responded to the scene promptly, within three minutes of being alerted.

Esposito described the scene upon arrival, noting that the fire had already extended to the second floor and attic of the residence with flames visible from the windows on the first floor. The firefighters worked swiftly to extinguish the two-alarm blaze by 3 a.m. local time. The affected areas of the home were primarily living spaces, with makeshift walls and substandard means of egress, such as blocked exits and stairways.
The three individuals who tragically lost their lives in the fire were identified as Mohamaed Abdaelsalmzaaher, 67; Jean Ellie Ernest, 52; and Ibrahima Diakite, 45. Eight others were taken to local hospitals in stable condition, while three firefighters sustained minor injuries during the operation. The fire is currently under investigation by both the FDNY and the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Authorities at the scene expressed concern over the lack of working smoke detectors in the overcrowded home. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker stressed the importance of having functioning smoke detectors, stating that it could have potentially saved lives in this instance. He also highlighted the presence of extension cords on the premises, which can pose a fire hazard if not used properly.
Public records revealed that the property had been the subject of multiple complaints filed with the city’s Buildings Department over the years, mostly related to illegal conversions.
