A dramatic incident unfolded in Belize as a U.S. citizen was fatally shot after hijacking a plane. The individual, identified as Akinyela Sawa Taylor, aged 49, took control of a Tropic Air Belize plane on Thursday, April 17th. The unfortunate turn of events saw Taylor brandishing a knife during the hijacking.

The alarming situation occurred at the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport in Belize. Taylor, who was among 14 passengers onboard, seized control of the aircraft before it was set to depart from Corozal to San Pedro. His demand for additional fuel to leave Belize led to an extended period of circling in the air before the plane safely landed at Ladyville airport.

During the unnerving flight, Taylor reportedly stabbed two fellow passengers, Fitzgerald Brown and Jair Castañeda, as well as the pilot, Howell Grange. In a courageous act, one of the passengers who possessed a licensed firearm took action and shot Taylor as the plane made its landing. Fortunately, the wounded passengers and pilot survived and were promptly airlifted to a medical facility for treatment.

Despite all efforts, Taylor succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital. Investigations are underway to ascertain how Taylor, a military veteran and former football coach from Missouri, managed to enter Belize after being denied entry over the weekend.

The U.S. Embassy in Belize, represented by spokesperson Luke Martin, revealed that Taylor was determined to return to the United States. The reasons behind his actions remain unclear, prompting collaborative efforts between the embassy and local authorities. The State Department expressed shock at the incident, acknowledging the potential for a far worse outcome given the number of individuals on board.

Belize’s Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, commended the pilot for his exceptional handling of the perilous situation, highlighting the pilot’s actions as heroic. Officials from Tropic Air Belize echoed this sentiment, emphasising the stringent training undergone by their pilots to effectively manage challenging scenarios.
