Ind. Mother Accused of Bringing Firearm to School and Threatening Teacher

A disturbing incident unfolded at Valley Mills Elementary School in Indianapolis as a mother allegedly brought a gun to the school and issued threats towards her daughter’s teacher, as reported by court records seen by PEOPLE magazine.
The accused, Carrie Rivers, aged 48, faced charges including possession of a firearm on school premises and harassment following the altercation at the aforementioned elementary school on Friday, April 11.
According to NBC News, on Wednesday, April 9, officers from the Decatur Township School Police Department received a report of a confrontational parent on the school grounds. Upon arrival, they observed Rivers carrying an object resembling a firearm in her waistband.
Allegedly, Rivers targeted her daughter’s sixth-grade teacher due to a subject matter related to same-sex relationships in a classroom assignment. The teacher, who had a photo of her wife and daughter displayed on her desk, assigned a task involving flags, including the rainbow pride flag, which Rivers vehemently opposed, claiming it was an attempt to impose personal beliefs on her child.
As officers intervened to apprehend the situation and recovered the firearm from Rivers, she reportedly disclosed that she was not aware of carrying it, citing habitual wearing as the reason. Despite being cautioned about the law prohibiting firearms on school premises, Rivers made derogatory remarks towards the teacher before deciding to withdraw her daughter from the school.
Subsequently, a series of threatening messages were said to be sent by Rivers to the teacher, containing alarming content such as “God will condemn you to hell” and warnings to be prepared for the unexpected. Although the messages did not pose an immediate threat to students or staff, an arrest warrant was issued in response to the escalating situation.
Following the incident, the school district released a statement stating that the individual in question had been escorted off the premises without further incident and reassured that appropriate actions were taken to address the threats made. Moreover, an arrest warrant was issued to prevent any further access to the campus.
In a statement to NBC News, Leon Rivers, Carrie’s husband, defended her actions by claiming that carrying a firearm was habitual for security purposes, even though it was unintentionally brought onto school grounds. He highlighted a perceived casual attitude towards firearms among other parents at the school.
Efforts to obtain additional details from the Decatur Township School Police Department and Valley Mills Elementary School regarding the incident were met with no immediate response.
