During a recent emotional reunion of the five lead actors from the iconic 1985 film The Breakfast Club, Emilio Estevez shared a surprising revelation about the first time he met his co-stars. The beloved movie, written and directed by the late John Hughes, featured Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, and Molly Ringwald as a group of high school students serving Saturday detention.

While Ringwald and Hall were specifically chosen by Hughes for their roles, the rest of the ensemble had to audition before coming together. Estevez recalled the initial meeting during a C2E2 panel in Chicago, where he disclosed the unique circumstances surrounding his introduction to the cast.
On the night before the cast’s first gathering for a script read-through at a hotel in Century City, Estevez underwent a dental procedure to remove all four wisdom teeth. Despite being on pain medication, he received a call from his agent insisting that he attend the event. With a swollen face and dazed from the pain pills, Estevez reluctantly agreed to join his co-stars.
Arriving at the hotel for the read-through, Estevez was unable to drive due to his condition, so a car was sent to pick him up. It was during this session that the actors, including Ringwald, Hall, Sheedy, and Nelson, came together for the first time to discuss the script of The Breakfast Club.
Following the reading, Hughes surprised the cast by showing them a first cut of another one of his films, Sixteen Candles, which also featured Ringwald and Hall. Estevez humorously revealed that he passed out during the screening, only waking up at the end credits. Jokingly, Nelson suggested that Estevez might have been getting fired for his unexpected nap during the film viewing.
Despite the unusual start to their collaboration, Estevez did not lose his role in the movie. The film went on to become a classic coming-of-age story that resonated with audiences for generations. Although the cast has reunited over the years, the C2E2 panel was a rare occasion where all the lead actors shared the stage together after four decades.
Reflecting on the significance of the reunion, Ringwald expressed her emotional gratitude towards having the entire cast come together, particularly noting Estevez’s participation. Estevez explained his absence from past reunions by mentioning that he had deliberately skipped all his high school reunions, but felt compelled to join his co-stars on this special occasion.
The Breakfast Club remains a timeless cinematic treasure that continues to captivate audiences with its portrayal of teenage angst and self-discovery. Estevez’s anecdote about his unconventional introduction to the cast adds a quirky behind-the-scenes glimpse into the making of this beloved film.
