An American college student, Owen Ray, faced an unexpected ordeal during his time in Copenhagen, Denmark, leading to nearly two weeks of imprisonment in Vestre prison. The incident unfolded after what his family describes as an unprovoked altercation with an Uber driver. Ray, a 19-year-old student at Miami University in Ohio, and a friend, also a U.S. citizen, found themselves in a predicament at the Copenhagen airport on April 1 due to a fare dispute with the Uber driver.

According to the family spokesperson, on March 31, Ray and his friend mistakenly input the wrong destination during their Uber ride back to their hotel in Copenhagen. Upon realizing the error and being unable to rectify it, they requested to be taken to the correct hotel. However, the driver refused to comply with their request, prompting Ray and his friend to exit the vehicle and cancel the ride, as is standard procedure with Uber payments made through the app.

Subsequently, the friends attempted to secure another Uber to return to their hotel. However, the situation took a turn when the original Uber driver reappeared approximately five minutes later, alleging that he had not been paid for the initial ride. Despite the friends’ assurances that payment would be processed through the app, tensions escalated as the driver reportedly threatened them. The altercation turned physical, with the driver purportedly assaulting Owen Ray, leading to both friends fleeing the scene out of fear.
The sequence of events was captured on the Uber’s dash cam video, which has become a crucial piece of evidence in the legal proceedings in Denmark. The following day, the pair, who were planning to depart the country on their scheduled flights, found themselves arrested by Danish police on charges of common assault. The family spokesperson strongly refutes the allegations, asserting that Ray and his friend were victims in the situation.
In response to the incident, an Uber spokesperson emphasised the company’s commitment to the safety of all users of the app, stating that they take reports of violence seriously. The Uber driver involved in the altercation reported to the company that he had been assaulted by the two riders, leading to their subsequent arrest by the Danish authorities. The matter is now subject to investigation by the Danish police to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
Ray’s parents expressed relief at his release from custody, but voiced concerns over the confiscation of his passport by Danish authorities, hindering his return to the United States. They maintain that Owen is innocent and urge Danish officials to facilitate his prompt repatriation. The unfolding events have underscored the complexities of international legal matters and the challenges faced by individuals embroiled in unforeseen circumstances abroad.
As the situation continues to develop, the case highlights the importance of diligence and caution when using ride-sharing services in unfamiliar territories. Instances of miscommunication and disputes can escalate rapidly, underscoring the need for clear communication and adherence to safety protocols. The experience serves as a cautionary tale for travellers, reinforcing the need to remain vigilant and composed in challenging situations that may arise during overseas travels.
