A group of ten University of North Texas (UNT) students recently found themselves in a precarious situation as they were stranded on Lake Ray Roberts in north Texas. The students had set out on two canoes and five paddle boards, only to lose control due to strong winds, causing them to drift towards the center of the lake. Panicked and clinging to their paddle boards, the students made a distress call to 911, prompting a response from the Texas Game Wardens.

The Cooke County Game Warden swiftly acted upon the 911 call and, along with paramedics, ventured out onto the lake to rescue the stranded students. Despite the challenging conditions, all of the students were successfully brought to safety, although one of them had to be taken to a local hospital for hypothermia treatment. Reflecting on the incident, officials expressed gratitude for the positive outcome while emphasizing that the situation could have taken a much darker turn.

Authorities stressed the importance of being cautious on the water, advising individuals to always check the weather conditions, wear a life jacket, and be aware of their own limits when engaging in water activities. Additionally, the Texas State Park Police, Cooke County EMS, and Denton County Dispatch played crucial roles in the successful rescue operation, highlighting the significance of collaboration in emergencies.
The Texas Game Wardens also extended their gratitude to a kind-hearted fisherman who assisted in pulling the students out of the water, showcasing the community’s spirit of solidarity in times of need. Lake Ray Roberts, named after a former Texas congressman, is situated next to Ray Roberts Lake State Park, providing a range of recreational opportunities such as camping, hiking, biking, swimming, paddling, and fishing.
Reports indicated that the students remained in the water for approximately 40 minutes before they were rescued.
