Man Sentenced for Posing as Nurse Online to Lure Women Before Attacking Them

A man from New Jersey has been sentenced to ten years in prison for posing as a nurse online to lure women before attacking them. Herman Brightman used the internet and dating apps to target women and then subjected them to violent acts when they tried to end the relationships.
Brightman adopted the alias “Nazir Griffiths” or “Nazir Luckett” on Facebook and the dating app Hinge, presenting himself as a nurse or nurse practitioner working in New York City hospitals. By sending photos and videos of himself donning medical attire, such as scrubs and lab coats, he gained the trust of his victims before turning violent.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Brightman assaulted, kidnapped, and harassed four women in various locations between January 2022 and 2023, including New Jersey, Mount Vernon, Queens, and the Bronx. He became aggressive towards the women, especially if they wanted to break off the relationship, exhibiting threatening behaviour that caused alarm.
The court heard that Brightman’s violent tendencies escalated in instances where women attempted to leave him. In one harrowing incident in July 2022, he held a woman and her child at knifepoint in West New York, N.J., after she tried to end the relationship. Threatening her life, he prevented her from leaving his premises until she managed to escape and contact the authorities.
Brightman’s criminal activities extended to physically and verbally attacking another woman in August 2023, where he brandished a knife and made terrifying threats. Additionally, he coerced a third woman to join him in his car and subjected her to physical harm, illustrating a pattern of abusive behaviour towards vulnerable individuals.
Moreover, Brightman was implicated in fabricating a professional identity on LinkedIn, falsely claiming to work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This deception not only misled his victims but also facilitated his manipulation tactics, highlighting the sinister nature of his actions.
The severity of Brightman’s offenses was underscored by his plea of guilty to charges of committing violent crimes across state lines and issuing interstate threats. Following the sentencing, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Matthew Podolsky, emphasised the importance of holding perpetrators like Brightman accountable to protect others from harm in the future.
Brightman’s case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who exploit online platforms to perpetrate violence.
