In a heartwarming tale of resilience and purpose, a one-year-old golden retriever named Ruby has transitioned from being abandoned in an animal shelter to training as a service dog with the Asista Foundation. Ruby’s journey began in the summer of 2024, when her previous owner relinquished her to the SPCA Roussillon in Québec, Canada. Despite the challenging circumstances, Ruby’s affectionate and compassionate nature stood out to shelter staff, who recognised her potential to be a source of support and comfort.
The Asista Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing dogs from shelters and training them to assist individuals with mental health challenges, took Ruby under its wing. With the support of Nick Suzuki, the Montreal Canadiens’ NHL captain, and his fiancée Caitlin Fitzgerald, who have been long-time volunteers with Asista, Ruby embarked on a new chapter of her life. Suzuki, serving as an ambassador for Asista, was instrumental in facilitating Ruby’s transition to becoming a service dog.
Fitzgerald recounts the moment they received the request to foster Ruby for evaluation: “Nick and I were on a plane returning from vacation when we received a text… We didn’t hesitate one bit and were even ready to pick her up as soon as we landed!” Little did they know that what was meant to be a temporary arrangement would evolve into a lifelong commitment. Within days, Ruby had effortlessly integrated herself into their lives, displaying not just potential as a service dog but also as a loving companion.
After a period of adjustment with Suzuki, Fitzgerald, and their two cats, Ruby moved to a temporary foster home within Asista’s programme. Here, she received the care, training in basic commands, and structured environment necessary for her development. As she progressed through her training, Ruby’s aptitude and eagerness to serve became evident, prompting Asista to select her for their innovative mobile Facility Service Dog Program.
Unlike traditional service dog programmes that assign canines to specific locations, the mobile initiative pairs dogs with professionals who travel to various sites to offer support to individuals with mental health needs. It was during this phase that Fitzgerald and Suzuki decided to become Ruby’s permanent caregivers and programme partners, recognising the profound impact she could have in their lives and the lives of others.
Fitzgerald explains, “We hadn’t planned on adopting a dog, but fate had other ideas… both Nick and I have immersed ourselves into learning everything about the training process, and she now comes with us almost everywhere as we continue to prepare her for her role.” Ruby’s specialised training focuses on equipping her with the skills necessary for crisis management, team support, and providing comfort to those in distress.
Throughout her training, Ruby has exhibited a remarkable ability to sense and respond to the emotions of individuals, offering solace and stability in challenging situations. Fitzgerald describes the transformative effect Ruby has on people: “The way she can walk into a room and instantly de-escalate a situation… it’s almost like a little moment of magic.” Ruby’s capacity to intuitively connect with those in need underscores the vital role she will play as a service dog.
As Ruby nears the completion of her training, Fitzgerald envisions her contributing to filling existing gaps in mental health care, particularly during crises.
