A recent recall has been issued for Cabot Creamery butter in seven states due to potential fecal contamination. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of Cabot Creamery 8oz Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted product on March 26. The contamination was due to elevated levels of coliform bacteria, which is commonly found in the environment and in feces. While coliform itself is usually harmless, its presence may indicate the existence of other harmful pathogens.

The FDA has classified the contamination as Class III, indicating that consuming the affected product is not likely to cause adverse health effects. Despite this low risk, health officials are recommending consumers in the affected states to take precautions. The recall involves around 189 cases or 1,700 pounds of the Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted, sold in two 4-ounce sticks inside an 8-ounce package.
The affected states include Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Arkansas. Authorities in these states are working to remove the potentially contaminated butter from store shelves. Although the majority of the affected product was retrieved before reaching consumers, 17 packages made their way into Vermont households.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled butter are advised to check the packaging for the best buy information. If the package reads “09/09/25 Lot: 090925-055 Item #: 2038,” it should be avoided and returned to the store of purchase or disposed of safely. Despite the recall, no illnesses related to the contaminated butter have been reported so far.
A spokesperson from Cabot Creamery reassured the public of their commitment to quality and food safety, stating that they are taking all necessary steps to uphold these standards. Parent company Agri-Mark has identified the cause of the contamination and has implemented measures to address it. They have confirmed that no other products were affected by the recall.
The recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the stringent measures in place to protect consumers from potential health risks. As investigations continue and actions are taken to prevent future incidents, authorities are urging vigilance among consumers when it comes to product recalls. Stay informed and stay safe.
