Renowned chef Bobby Flay recently hosted a heartwarming “Celebration of Life” event in honour of his late father, Bill Flay. The event, held in New York, was a touching tribute to the elder Flay, who passed away at the age of 93 on February 23. Bobby, along with his daughter Sophie, gathered with family and friends to commemorate Bill’s life in a special way that reflected his love for food. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bobby shared, “My dad and I were very close, and Sophie and my dad were very close. They had their very special relationship. So we had a sort of celebration of his life on Saturday and I cooked things that my dad liked to eat, foods that were important to him.”

The menu for the celebration included some of Bill Flay’s favourite dishes. Bobby cooked pork chops, as he revealed, “my dad loved pork — pork tenderloin, pork loin, pork chops, didn’t matter.” He also served a loaf of sliced seeded rye bread from Orwashers Bakery and a sweet and sour cabbage that his grandmother used to make on Sunday nights. The event was not only a feast for the stomach but also for the heart, with Sophie uncovering old pictures of Bill for the family to reminisce over. Bobby expressed, “It was a really wonderful day, actually.”
Before the celebration, Bobby and Sophie took a poignant trip to bury Bill’s ashes at the cemetery. As a former Navy lieutenant, Bill received a moving tribute as two naval officers played “Taps” and performed a flag folding ceremony. Reflecting on the experience, Bobby shared, “Being able to have something to commemorate somebody’s life that’s important to you is a really important part of closure.” This gesture not only honoured Bill’s memory but also provided a sense of peace and closure for the family.
Bobby Flay’s commitment to preserving legacies extends beyond his father. He also commemorated his late cat Nacho, who passed away in 2023, by establishing the first National Nacho Flay Day on April 5. Through his cat food company, Made by Nacho, Bobby marked the day with a charitable initiative. The company donated $82,625 worth of meals to the Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, embodying a spirit of giving back in memory of his beloved feline companion. Bobby emphasised the importance of finding positivity in grief, acknowledging that “grief is a hard thing,” and highlighting the necessity of addressing it psychologically.
