Tiffany Smith has played a pivotal role in helping her daughter, Piper Rockelle, attain immense fame on social media, amassing millions of followers and significant earnings. However, a lawsuit in 2022 shed light on a darker side to this momager’s methods, posing a threat to their flourishing YouTube enterprise.
In 2016, Piper, at just 8 years old, along with her mother, began creating content for YouTube. Their videos, showcasing Piper engaging in various activities like caring for a pet turtle and crafting slime, quickly garnered popularity. Smith actively sought out other young talents to join Piper’s videos, forming “The Squad,” a group of child stars who became a sensation on YouTube, with billions of views and millions in earnings.

Behind the scenes, Smith, alongside her boyfriend, Hunter Hill, orchestrated the success of “The Squad.” However, their management strategies raised concerns among Squad members and their parents. Several Squad members left between 2017 and 2021, citing a toxic environment fostered by Smith. Allegations of child labor violations and abuse emerged, leading to an $22 million lawsuit in 2022, filed by 11 former Squad members accusing Smith of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.
The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2024, with the plaintiffs receiving $1.85 million. Following these events, a Netflix docuseries titled “Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing” delves into the claims surrounding Piper, Smith, and The Squad. The series, streaming since April 9, reveals disturbing stories from ex-Squad members about their experiences with Smith.
Smith, a single mother raising Piper in Canton, Georgia, dedicated herself to Piper’s pursuits, initially in pageants before transitioning to social media. Conflicting reports exist on the reasons behind Piper’s shift to social platforms. Smith states Piper’s interest, while Piper’s aunt suggests it was Smith’s desire. Piper’s quick rise on Musical.ly led to her YouTube debut, supported by Hunter Hill, who managed her content both on and off-camera.
As Piper’s fame and earnings grew, Smith enlisted other young YouTubers into The Squad, which Hill managed and profited from. The rigorous filming schedule and alleged exploitation of young talents led to complaints and legal actions against Smith. In response to the accusations, Smith countersued the plaintiffs, alleging their motives were driven by financial envy. The subsequent settlement in 2024 saw Smith denying wrongdoing while paying the plaintiffs $1.85 million.
Despite the financial repercussions and YouTube demonetizing Piper’s channel post-lawsuit, Piper’s social media following continues to expand, with over 12 million YouTube subscribers, 6.1 million Instagram followers, and 14.8 million TikTok followers. However, the once vibrant Squad has disbanded, and Smith’s presence on social media appears to have diminished post-controversy.
While the lawsuit brought financial turbulence, it also highlighted risks for minors in the influencer industry. The plaintiffs aimed to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents. Smith and Piper’s journey stands as a cautionary tale amidst the glitzy world of social media stardom, showcasing the importance of ethical practices and protection for young talents.
