A heartwarming and unexpected event took place at the Minnesota Como Park Zoo & Conservatory as a 6-year-old, two-toed sloth named Sago gave birth in front of delighted zoo-goers on Wednesday, April 2. The zoo staff shared their excitement over the unique experience, with senior zookeeper Jill Erzar expressing joy at witnessing the special moment. Erzar highlighted that observing a sloth being born right before their eyes was truly exceptional, and Sago was already proving to be an excellent first-time mother.

The surprise birth of the baby sloth, weighing just under one pound, was a significant event for the zoo as sloths typically keep their pregnancies well-hidden with no visible signs. Despite the lack of noticeable changes during Sago’s 11.5-month gestation period, Erzar noted that the sloth displayed a heightened appetite in the days leading up to the birth. This behaviour prompted closer observation by the zookeepers, ultimately culminating in the remarkable event witnessed by visitors.

Erzar shared that although Sago is typically reclusive, she chose to give birth in front of an audience, spending around 20 minutes bringing her offspring into the world all on her own. The senior zookeeper described Sago’s decision to showcase the birth as an indication of the sloth’s desire to share her creation with others. Remarkably, there was no need for any medical intervention during the birth process, emphasising the natural instincts and capabilities of the sloth mother.

As the zoo celebrates this addition to their animal family, the staff will monitor Sago and her baby closely during the nursing period, expected to last between six to nine months. With female sloths typically dedicating up to a year to raising their young, the newborn will receive the necessary care and attention from Sago. Looking ahead, the zoo anticipates the growth and development of the baby sloth under Sago’s nurturing care. While the newborn’s gender is yet to be determined, the primary focus remains on ensuring both mother and baby thrive in their natural habitat. Erzar emphasized Sago’s protective nature and the bond she shares with her offspring, mentioning that the baby sloth has not yet met its father, Ziggy, as Sago prioritises exclusive bonding time with her young.
