Helaleh Cheraghmakani, a 34-year-old mother, met a tragic end in October when she was struck by a bus in England. Authorities revealed that Cheraghmakani was attempting to catch a double-decker bus that had departed 45 seconds earlier than its scheduled time. The heartbreaking incident was shared during an inquest that took place on April 7 at Nottingham Coroners’ Court, as reported by BBC News and the Nottingham Post.

According to reports from Nottingham Police, the fatal collision occurred on the morning of October 22, 2024, in Nottingham city centre. The Nottingham City Transport stated that the accident happened as the bus was turning into Parliament Street after leaving the bus stop at George Street.

During the inquest held on Monday, a collision investigator detailed that Cheraghmakani was knocking on the bus door in an attempt to board it when she was caught by a tire as the bus made a left turn, causing her to fall. Even though the police conducted an investigation, they concluded that the collision was not a criminal act. It was revealed that Cheraghmakani was running late for her first day at a new job, which was scheduled to commence at 6 a.m. on the day of the tragic incident.

Bus driver Anthony Watson recounted that he heard a noise on the side of the bus and was unable to see anything before stopping the bus upon noticing the rear wheel rolling over a person. Watson, in his statement, expressed deep sorrow over the devastating event and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Cheraghmakani’s family.

Helaleh Cheraghmakani and her husband Ramin Dehbandi, who hailed from Iran and had relocated to the U.K. in 2023 with their daughter, were described as a loving couple who had been together since they were 18. Dehbandi painted a poignant picture of his grief at the loss of his wife, remarking that their world had been shattered by the tragedy. The aftermath of the inquest left Dehbandi heartbroken as he expressed his profound love for his late wife.

The inquest also shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accident, indicating that factors such as poor lighting conditions at that time and Cheraghmakani’s dark attire may have contributed to the tragedy. Legal representative Daniel Denton, speaking on behalf of Dehbandi, labelled the incident as a “tragic case” and vowed to seek justice through the civil courts.

The occurrence serves as a harrowing reminder of the importance of road safety and adherence to transport policies to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
