K-pop group Kiss of Life, comprised of members Julie, Natty, Belle, and Haneul, recently faced backlash after a live stream celebrating Julie’s 25th birthday took a controversial turn. The theme of the livestream was “old-school hip hop vibes,” during which the members dressed in attire typically associated with the genre and used accents that some fans found offensive.

The group’s choice of attire, including oversized chains, snapback hats, cornrows, and large hoop earrings, along with adopting nicknames like Lil Taco Belle, NT, and Bob Sky, did not sit well with many viewers. Additionally, Kiss of Life lip-synced to 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and showcased a photo of three Black men as inspiration for their outfits, leading to accusations of cultural appropriation and ridicule.

Fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with one post accusing the group of engaging in “modern day blackface and cultural mockery.” The controversy prompted Kiss of Life to issue a public apology on April 5, acknowledging the insensitivity of their actions and expressing remorse for causing disappointment among their fanbase, known as “Kissys.”
In their handwritten apology, the group stated, “Our intention was to show how much we loved the category of old school hip hop because it greatly influences our music. While shooting the content, we ended up taking the concept too far. We realize now that our content was culturally insensitive and take full responsibility for our actions and can only promise to do better.”
Since the incident, Kiss of Life has taken time to reflect on their actions and pledged to educate themselves to prevent similar missteps in the future. They emphasized their commitment to showing sincerity through actions rather than just words and expressed gratitude for the support of their fans, promising to honour them in every way possible.
Despite the backlash, Kiss of Life continues their Asian tour, with scheduled shows running through May 2. The group’s response to the controversy serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity and the need for continuous learning and growth in the ever-evolving landscape of music and entertainment.
The incident involving Kiss of Life underscores the impact of cultural misappropriation in the entertainment industry and the responsibility that artists carry in respecting and honouring diverse cultural influences. As fans and critics alike hold artists accountable for their actions, it is essential for performers to engage in meaningful dialogue, reflection, and education to foster a more inclusive and respectful creative environment.
Moving forward, Kiss of Life’s apology sets a precedent for accountability and growth within the K-pop community, highlighting the significance of acknowledging mistakes, learning from them, and striving to do better. The incident serves as a valuable lesson for artists and fans alike, reinforcing the importance of cultural awareness, sensitivity, and mutual respect in the global music landscape.
