Walt Disney dubbed the unveiling of his $17 million theme park as “Black Sunday”. On July 17, 1955, Disneyland was intended to be an exclusive event, restricted to invitees only. However, the entire state of California was eagerly awaiting the grand reveal, and thousands flocked to the “Happiest Place on Earth”, whether they had an invitation or not. Families camped outside the gates in hopes of joining the celebrations, leading to a 7-mile L.A. traffic standstill on the Santa Ana Freeway.
Over 10,000 individuals forged tickets in an attempt to secure entry into the park, resulting in overcrowding. Vendors struggled to cope with the high demand, and several restrooms within the park malfunctioned.
