James Van Der Beek, well-known for his role in the classic TV series “Dawson’s Creek,” recently took a trip down memory lane during a panel reunion with Kerr Smith at the Steel City Con in Pittsburgh. The now 48-year-old actor reminisced about a past experience, “I made a movie when I was 17, and everybody said, ‘Are you ready for this to change your life?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah!’ I remember going to that movie with my college friends, and there was only one other person in the theater,” he said. “I was like, ‘I don’t think this is going to change my life.’ And it didn’t at all.”
Van Der Beek shared the moment when the enormity of the show hit him, “Two weeks in, I was doing an appearance in Seattle, and they said, ‘There are going to be 100 people here.’ And I said, ‘There are not going to be 100 people.’ And there were, like, 500, and they were screaming, and I was like, ‘Whoa, this thing is going to be way bigger than I ever thought it was going to be.'”
His co-star Kerr Smith, 53, who joined the show in season two, reflected on his own experience, “For me, because I got there a little later, the beginning of season two, I remember it was my first week and Joshua [Jackson] said to me, he goes, this was after everything that James had experienced, and he said, ‘Are you ready for your life to change?’ I go, ‘What do you mean?’ He goes, ‘We are a h-i-i-it.’ And sure enough, he was right.”
“Dawson’s Creek” aired from 1998 to 2003, following the lives of characters like Dawson (Van Der Beek), Joey Potter (Katie Holmes), Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) and Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams).
