John B. Johnson, a dedicated runner from Westlake, Ohio, had a lifelong dream of participating in the prestigious Boston Marathon. However, his plans took an unexpected turn in Spring 2023 when, at the age of 35, he was diagnosed with colon cancer just two weeks after qualifying for the marathon by running the Cleveland Marathon. Johnson, an identity architect, had to put his marathon aspirations on hold as he battled the disease.
During his cancer journey over the past two years, Johnson forged a deep connection with his colorectal surgeon, Dr. David Rosen from the Cleveland Clinic. As they worked together to fight and ultimately eradicate the cancer, they made a joint decision to train for and run the Boston Marathon. Their inspiring journey will culminate on April 25, 2025, when Johnson and Rosen will take on the challenge of the legendary race together.

Dr. Rosen, Division Head of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, expressed profound admiration for Johnson’s resilience and determination. Witnessing Johnson’s transformation from vulnerability to strength has been a rewarding experience for Rosen, highlighting the profound impact of their doctor-patient relationship.
In addition to their marathon training, Johnson and Rosen are fundraising for DetecTogether, an organization dedicated to promoting early detection of colon cancer. Dr. Rosen emphasises the importance of recognizing potential symptoms of colorectal cancer, such as bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or unusual stool patterns. He underscores the significance of seeking medical attention promptly, regardless of age or perceived health status, to ensure early diagnosis and treatment.
Sharing his personal account with PEOPLE’s Wendy Grossman Kantor, Johnson disclosed the pivotal moments of his cancer diagnosis and subsequent journey to recovery. Reflecting on the initial signs he experienced before his diagnosis, Johnson reiterated the crucial message of advocating for one’s health and seeking medical evaluation when something feels amiss.
Despite the initial shock and disbelief of his cancer diagnosis, particularly at his young age and peak physical condition, Johnson navigated the treatment process with the unwavering support of his wife, Sarah, and their growing family. The unexpected news of his cancer diagnosis came at a time when Sarah was pregnant with their son, Theodore, underscoring the emotional turmoil and resilience displayed by the Johnson family.
Through his candid storytelling and willingness to share his journey, Johnson aims to raise awareness about colon cancer among young adults and destigmatize conversations around health issues that are often considered taboo. By encouraging open dialogue and proactive health measures, Johnson hopes to inspire others to prioritize their well-being and advocate for timely medical attention.
As Johnson and Dr. Rosen gear up for the Boston Marathon, their daily communication and joint training efforts symbolize the power of collaboration and shared determination. Johnson’s journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that can emerge from adversity, offering hope and inspiration to individuals facing their battles with courage and optimism.
The remarkable bond between Johnson and Dr. Rosen exemplifies the profound impact of compassionate healthcare providers and dedicated patients working together towards a common goal of overcoming challenges and embracing life’s uncertainties with unwavering determination. As they embark on their marathon quest, Johnson’s story stands as a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity, reminding us all of the power of perseverance and hope in the midst of life’s unexpected twists and turns.
