The JWST’s observations on Feb. 5 revealed that asteroid 2024 YR4 could be larger and more solid than previously thought. Subsequent scrutiny on March 26 confirmed that the asteroid no longer poses a threat to Earth, with just a minimal chance of striking on Dec. 22, 2032. Nevertheless, Andrew Rivkin, an astronomer from Johns Hopkins University, emphasised the lingering possibility of a lunar collision in 2032. Additional JWST monitoring is planned to track the asteroid as it journeys into the outer reaches of the solar system.

If asteroid 2024 YR4 were to collide with Earth, the impact could result in the devastation akin to 500 Hiroshima bombs.
