Scientists Unveil Groundbreaking Discovery of Shark Noises

In a groundbreaking development, scientists have successfully recorded the first-ever known noises made by sharks, challenging the widely held belief that sharks are silent creatures. Marine biologist Carolin Nieder led the research in New Zealand, where she uncovered that rig sharks, also known as Mustelus lenticulatus or lemon sharks, produce clicking sounds with their teeth when handled by humans.
The revelation marks a significant shift in the understanding of shark behaviour. Nieder, who works at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, shared her findings in a study published in the prestigious journal Royal Society Open Science. The unexpected discovery sheds light on the vocalisation capabilities of these creatures that have long been perceived as silent predators in the ocean.

During the study, Nieder and her team observed that the rig sharks made clicking sounds with their flat teeth when interacting with humans. This observation was initially made incidentally while conducting a separate study on shark acoustics for Nieder’s doctoral research at the University of Auckland. The findings challenge the conventional notion that sharks do not communicate through sound.
According to Nieder, the rig sharks produced these clicking sounds as a response to handling stress or a startle reflex. The researchers captured these unique sounds using underwater recording devices as the sharks were moved between tanks or manipulated by handlers. The clicks, which lasted an average of 48 milliseconds and reached a volume of 156 decibels, were distinct and specific to this species.
The study highlighted that the clicking noises may serve a purpose beyond communication, possibly indicating a defensive or warning signal. Nieder suggested that these sounds could disorient potential predators for a brief moment, allowing the vulnerable rig sharks to evade danger. Notably, the researchers acknowledged that further investigation is required to fully comprehend the implications and functions of these shark noises.
Despite the groundbreaking nature of this research, experts like marine biologist Dennis Higgs from the University of Windsor emphasised the need for more extensive studies to determine the broader context of these findings. Higgs suggested exploring whether rig sharks produce these noises in their natural habitat or exclusively in response to human interaction.
Nieder expressed hope that the study’s findings would spark more interest and curiosity in shark research, encouraging ongoing exploration into the enigmatic world of these apex predators. The revelations of the study underscore the complexity and adaptability of sharks, hinting at a deeper understanding of their behaviour and communication mechanisms in the marine ecosystem.
