Kohl’s, a popular department store, is set to close 27 of its locations across 15 states this weekend as part of its restructuring efforts. This decision comes after the company filed for bankruptcy earlier in the year, with plans to close these stores by April 2025. The majority of Kohl’s 1,150 nationwide stores will remain open, but the closures reflect the challenges faced by the retailer in the current market.
In a press release, Kohl’s expressed gratitude to its employees and acknowledged the impact of declining sales on its operations. Reports indicate that the chain experienced a 7.2% decrease in overall sales in the final quarter of 2024, leading to a significant drop in profits. As a result, the decision was made to shut down a number of underperforming stores in an effort to streamline operations and improve financial performance.

The closures will also see the end of the in-store Amazon return program at several locations. Initially launched in 2019, the program allowed customers to return Amazon purchases at Kohl’s stores. Unfortunately, this service will no longer be available at the impacted stores as part of the closure process. Additionally, Kohl’s will be reducing its workforce by 10% across the affected locations, with the closure of its San Bernardino E-commerce Distribution Center also on the horizon.
Notable among the closed stores are locations in states such as California, Texas, Illinois, and Ohio. While this decision is undoubtedly challenging for employees and customers in these areas, Kohl’s emphasises that it is part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Despite the closures, the retailer remains committed to serving its customers through its remaining stores and online platforms.
Founded in 1962 by Maxwell Kohl, the department store has been a staple in many communities for decades. Prior to the store closures, Kohl’s had collaborated with celebrities for various campaigns, including actress Lea Michele and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper in 2024. These initiatives aimed to engage customers and drive sales through innovative marketing strategies.
As Kohl’s navigates through these changes, the company continues to focus on providing quality products and services to its loyal customer base. While the closures may present challenges in the short term, the retailer remains optimistic about its future prospects. With a strong foundation and a history of adapting to market trends, Kohl’s is working towards a sustainable business model that will ensure its continued success in the retail industry.
