A mother has come forward with a troubling experience involving United Airlines and her “medically complex” 2-year-old son. Melissa Sotomayor recounted a distressing incident during their flight from Tampa, Florida, to Newark, New Jersey, on March 8. In a viral 10-minute TikTok video, she criticized the airline for its treatment of her and her son, Noah, labeling it as “ridiculous” and emotionally distressing. Despite United Airlines issuing an apology subsequently, Sotomayor expressed dissatisfaction, deeming the apology insincere.

Noah, Sotomayor’s son, relies on a ventilator, tracheostomy tube, portable oxygen concentrator, and a G-tube for his day-to-day functioning due to his vision and hearing impairments. Aware of the challenges they faced during travel, Sotomayor ensured all required medical paperwork was in place well in advance of their journey. While their outbound flight to Tampa was smooth, their return trip presented a starkly different scenario.

Shortly after being seated on the flight, a flight attendant instructed Sotomayor to disconnect Noah from his ventilator and oxygen concentrator for takeoff. Understanding the criticality of this equipment for Noah’s survival, Sotomayor declined the request. Despite providing extensive medical clearance documents and authorization from United Airlines for the equipment, the flight attendants persisted in demanding that the machinery be stowed under the seat.
Even after Sotomayor reiterated the life-supporting necessity of the equipment, the crew maintained their stance. Matters escalated when the captain intervened, accusing Sotomayor of endangering her son and other passengers, despite her compliance with FAA regulations and United Airlines’ prescribed procedures. The situation drew the attention of a fellow passenger who defended Sotomayor, highlighting the crew’s behaviour as potentially harassing and going against the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The captain’s involvement further delayed the flight, causing an hour-long standoff before the plane eventually took off. Post-flight, Sotomayor reached out to United’s corporate office, only to be met with a response she described as lacking in empathy. In their defence, United Airlines stated that they adhere to FAA guidelines and promised an internal investigation into the matter concerning Sotomayor’s interactions with the airline’s accessibility department.
Highlighting her dissatisfaction with the entire ordeal, Sotomayor emphasised the distressing nature of the treatment they received. Her final words serve as a cautionary tale for parents and caregivers of individuals with special needs, urging them to reconsider choosing United Airlines for their travel needs. United Airlines expressed regret over the incident and stated that they had reached out to Sotomayor to address her concerns, but the aftermath of the incident paints a disheartening picture of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities when seeking assistance and understanding while travelling.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding when dealing with individuals with special needs, especially in high-stress situations such as air travel. It highlights the need for better training for airline staff to handle such sensitive situations with compassion and compliance with disability laws. As we move towards a more inclusive society, instances like these shed light on the work that still needs to be done to ensure equal treatment and respect for all individuals, regardless of their abilities or challenges.
