Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez has recently been sentenced to five years in prison for his involvement in a shooting incident back in 2022. The incident involved Velasquez chasing down and shooting at a man who was accused of child molestation. The sentencing took place on Monday, March 24, after Velasquez pleaded no-contest to charges of attempted murder, felony assault, and gun charges in August 2024, according to the Santa Clara County Prosecutor’s Office.

The SCCPO stated that Velasquez’s actions during the 2022 incident constituted a “vigilante shooting spree” that resulted in the wounding of an unintended victim and put the lives of many at risk, including children, teachers, and parents in a school nearby. On the fateful day of February 28, 2022, Velasquez engaged in a high-speed chase in San Jose, California, while firing multiple shots at a truck carrying three individuals, one of whom was the accused child molester, Harry Goularte.
Reports indicate that Velasquez’s pursuit of Goularte was triggered by his four-year-old son’s claim of being sexually assaulted by Goularte. During the chase, Velasquez rammed the victims’ vehicle at a Morgan Hill intersection, firing additional rounds and injuring the driver. Unfortunately, the intended target, Goularte, was not harmed in the attack, with his 63-year-old male relative sustaining the gunshot wounds instead.
Following the incident, Velasquez was arrested by Morgan Hill police. Investigations revealed that Velasquez had conducted online searches related to cases of victims’ families taking action against perpetrators of sexual assault. The sentencing on Monday resulted in Velasquez being taken into custody, with credit for time served possibly reducing his overall prison term to around one year.
It is noted that the man accused of child molestation, Goularte, is still facing pending felony charges related to the initial allegations. Despite objections from the District Attorney’s office, Goularte was released from custody under a supervised own recognizance release program with GPS monitoring.
