In a tragic incident, a 16-year-old boy lost his life after setting off a fatal avalanche in Alaska. The young boy, Tucker Challans, was identified as the victim found dead in Turnagain Pass, situated south of Anchorage, Alaska, as confirmed by a press release from the Alaska State Troopers on Sunday, March 23.

The Alaska State Troopers were alerted about the avalanche, termed as ‘fatal’, on the mountain around 2:34 p.m. local time on March 22. Witnesses reported that the avalanche occurred following a group of people riding snow machines on the unstable area known as the backside of Seattle Ridge, northwest of the Seward Highway. It was revealed that a juvenile male triggered the avalanche and tragically lost his life after being buried under the snow.
The Alaska Mountain Rescue Group successfully recovered the boy’s body from a depth of about 10 feet, with the avalanche crown measuring 2 to 3 feet deep and approximately 500 feet wide, according to a news release from the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center. Despite the swift response from other riders in the area who managed to extract the buried rider within an hour, the boy was already deceased by the time rescuers reached him.
Wendy Wagner, the director of the Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center, explained that the avalanche was likely triggered when the teenager rode over a hidden weak layer of snow beneath the freshly fallen surface.
