Former Republican Representative Mia Love has tragically passed away at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Love, who made history as the first Black woman elected to Congress as a Republican, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumour, in 2022.
Love’s family announced her passing on Sunday, March 23, in a heartfelt post on social media. The post expressed gratitude for the impact Mia had on their lives and revealed that she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. The family also thanked everyone for their support and prayers during Mia’s illness.
The news of Love’s passing comes after she shared in an open letter published in March 2025 that her cancer had stopped responding to treatment. In the emotional letter addressed to her friends, fellow Americans, and Utahns, Love expressed her gratitude for the time she had and shared her hopes for the future.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrants, Love’s journey to becoming a congresswoman was a reflection of the American Dream. She overcame challenges, pursued education on a scholarship, and eventually entered politics, winning a seat on the Saratoga Springs City Council before becoming mayor and later a member of Congress.
During her time in Congress, Love focused on legislation related to banking regulation, pyramid schemes, and immigration. She served on the House Financial Services Committee and was part of the Congressional Black Caucus. Despite facing challenges, Love remained dedicated to her constituents and the causes she believed in.
After leaving Congress, Love continued to be involved in political commentary, contributing to networks like CNN and making appearances on shows like The View. She remained an active voice in conservative circles and participated in the electoral process as an elector for Utah in the 2020 presidential election.
Love’s battle with brain cancer was made public in 2024 when she shared her journey in an interview. She spoke optimistically about the initial results of her treatment but sadly, the cancer began to progress in early 2025. Her daughter, Abigale, provided updates on social media, informing followers that the treatment was no longer effective.
In her final days, Love penned a poignant letter expressing her wishes for the future of America.
