A mother in New Jersey has recently been arrested on child abuse charges after allegedly making her child wear a dead dog’s shock collar, as reported by local news outlets. Kimberly Cruz-Feliciano, aged 30, from Cape May, N.J., was taken into custody alongside her mother, Sonia Feliciano, aged 59, after school authorities noticed visible marks on the child’s body on March 17. Reports from Daily Voice, WPVI, and NBC10 Philadelphia confirm that investigations revealed the injuries were caused by an electric dog shock collar that had belonged to the family’s deceased pet.

According to a criminal complaint cited by WPVI, the child was found to have been wearing the shock collar “at all times in the home.” The victim disclosed to the police that the collar was stored in a bedroom along with other dog-related items and was regularly charged even after the dog had passed away. The child further revealed that the mother threatened them with more violence if they disclosed the abuse to anyone, as per the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Charges brought against the mother include two second-degree counts of aggravated assault, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one first-degree charge of witness tampering with threats of force, and one third-degree count of hindering, as outlined by Daily Voice. Presently, Kimberly Cruz-Feliciano is in custody at the Cape May County Correctional Center awaiting further legal proceedings. While the grandmother, Sonia Feliciano, faces fourth-degree tampering with evidence and hindering charges, she has been released pending a court appearance, the outlet reported.
Instances of abuse had previously been reported at the suspect’s residence, as per WPVI. A neighbour expressed shock at the news, stating, “It’s just sad. I hate to hear something like that, I really do. And it’s right here in the neighbourhood, and I did not know that.” Authorities, including the CMCPO, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland, and Cape May City Police Chief Dekon Fashaw, have been contacted for their comments on the incident, to which responses are awaited.
