A tragic incident unfolded following a family trip to Disneyland, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old boy at the hands of his own mother. The Santa Ana Police Department and Orange County District Attorney’s office revealed that Saritha Ramaraju, aged 48, stands accused of murdering her son, Yatin Ramaraju, after their visit to the popular theme park. According to court records obtained by PEOPLE, Saritha has been charged with one count of murder and one count of personally using a deadly weapon. If convicted on all charges, she could face a maximum sentence of 26 years to life.

The distressing events occurred on Wednesday, March 19, around 9:10 a.m., when Saritha contacted Santa Ana Police Communications to confess that she had fatally stabbed her son in their room at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Santa Ana, California. When authorities arrived, they discovered the young boy with his throat slit on the hotel room bed, surrounded by Disneyland souvenirs. A large kitchen knife, purchased by Saritha the day before, was also found at the scene. The O.C. District Attorney reported that it appeared the boy had been deceased for several hours before the emergency call was made.
Following her admission, Saritha was taken to a hospital after disclosing on the 911 call that she had consumed an unknown substance in an attempt to end her own life. Subsequently, she was discharged from the hospital and is now being held in custody at the Santa Ana jail. The tragic incident transpired after Saritha and Yatin embarked on a three-day trip to Disneyland together during a custody visit. Following her divorce from the boy’s father in 2018, Saritha relocated out of state. As per the O.C. District Attorney, Saritha was supposed to return Yatin to his father on the day of the incident.
